The Wren Press is the home of fine printing, from hand engraved personal writing paper to corporate printing and quality marketing material. We are committed to providing the highest level of service throughout the creation of your bespoke order.
Our hand-engraved dies are etched onto copper from the original artwork and then hand engraved. They are iconic to The Wren Press, notable for their exceptional quality and luxurious effect. This is the pinnacle in quality printing techniques, and requires exceptional skill and flawless craftsmanship.
With 30 years of experience, our master engraver was the last full 5 year apprentice within the trade of engraving. He was indentured to the Worshipful Stationers’ Hall, receiving the Freedom of the City of London. The detailing he can create as he sculpts and models the dies gives them a finesse and quality that is unparalleled within the industry.
Our skilled designers have, collectively, over 20 years’ industry experience, and each bring to the table a unique skill set with Masters and Bachelors degrees in Graphic Design, Photography and Product Design. Their wide portfolio of clients includes The Haberdashers’ Aske’s Federation, Blenheim Palace and Clarins.
Your bespoke die is hand-engraved by our skilled craftsmen onto a copper plate, achieving extraordinarily detailed images. The complete die is then used in a press with up to 2 tonnes per square inch of force behind it. The finished result is an exceptionally clear and detailed image, with a tactile raised effect and the characteristic indentation on the reverse.
Our die stamping is undoubtedly what makes The Wren Press so exceptional. Each of our craftsmen has over 30 years’ industry experience and have completed internal apprenticeships in die stamping and City and Guilds in Print Finishing, meaning that quality is assured to the highest standards.
Die Stamping is particularly effective in metallics, for monograms, crests or logos, but in any order it lends a certain luxury and quality that cannot be replicated. The hand-made die stamp is then sent to you as part of your order as a treasured keepsake from a one off event or to keep for future orders; a truly bespoke service.
One of our most cost-effective options, lithographic printing results in a high-quality, flat-printed image in any of our extensive range of ink colours. The possibilities are almost endless with this process, as we can print text, borders, logos or even full-colour images and the high-quality brightness of the ink invariably creates a dramatic effect. Similar to engraving, each colour required is a different run through the machine using separate plates.
Foil blocking is a specialty printing process that uses heat, pressure, metal dies and foil film. The foil comes in rolls in a wide variety of colours, finishes, and optical effects. Metallic foil is a popular choice with our customers – particularly gold foil, silver foil, copper foil, and holographic metallic foils – but are also available in solid colours in both glossy and matte finishes and create a beautiful de-bossed effect.
Creating a raised area on the page using a copper die, blind embossing gives a subtly lifted image that can be felt as well as seen.
De-bossing uses the same technique to create an indentation. This can be as pronounced or delicate as the graphics or words dictate, and careful choice of paper (avoiding bright whites and very smooth materials) will enhance the effect.
Bevelling, Edging and Gilding
These finishing methods can provide a little extra detail and finesse to your stationery. You may opt for hand painted coloured edging, to compliment or contrast with the print. This is particularly effective on letterheads and correspondence cards.
Alternatively, it is possible to include a hand-painted border on cards and paper, in a similar process to edging but with the ink obviously visible on the front of the card, creating a truly personal finish.
A truly luxurious option is a metallic bevel edge. The application of foil to the edges of the card gives a unique gleaming touch. More successful on thicker card, the edges are bevelled to give a slightly shaped finish and then the foil is applied by hand in several fine layers. This precise technique results in an exceptional finish in the light, just as appropriate on wedding invitations as luxurious business cards.
We have specialist calligraphers who can write the names or addresses on the invitations, placements and escort cards in beautiful script handwriting. They are able to write in a variety of modern and traditional styles, giving a truly personal finish to your order.
We are able to hand-line envelopes with coloured tissue or paper to match your invitation or ink colour, giving your product that truly unique touch.
Our expert finishers can hand-tie from a wide selection of ribbon colours and textures. If you would prefer to provide your own ribbon, please let us know.
We also offer a range of packaging solutions, from Belly Banding to Wedding Boxes and Tissue Lining, for the final finishing touches.
